Hi Janelia Soul! Great to speak with you today!
Have you been working on any new projects lately?
Yes I have. I recently lost my quarantine-15 weight gain by observing water only fasting and working on a new book titled Diary of my 3-5 Days Water-only Fasting. Which goes into the details about my experience with the fasting lifestyle and the results I have gotten from it. I am also working on the music video for "Bedroom Magician". I am traveling to Dubai and Accra, Ghana over the holidays and will be shooting the music video there which will be released in January.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
My musical influences include Sade, Zap Mama, Angelique Kidjo, King Sunny Ade and Fela Kuti.
On that note, who are some of your style or fashion influences?
I love Yemi Alade's fashion style. She is one of Nigeria's afrobeats artists and you can see that from the way she dresses.
How would you describe your sense of style?
My sense of style is afrocentric with a modern twist. So you will see me throw on an ankara top over a pair of jeans.
Do you find that your music and style tend to influence others in some way?
Actually I do, my dancers and I wear waist beads when we do our live performances and I see us starting a movement with this. We have influenced and educated a lot of women about the waist beads culture, so much so that it has become one of our best sellers on our merch store, janeliasoul.store. We also have a song that we perform live titled "Bakassi", it is a song that celebrates the women's "buttocks", no matter what size it is; small, medium, large, extra large, 2X, 3X and so on, lol. All should be celebrated. So while performing this song, we call the women up on stage to dance with us and give them free waist beads for their participation. This is one of the highlights of our show as it gets people talking about our band and waist beads. Plus we usually see a spike in sales on our merch store the next day, I guess from those that were too shy to come on stage. So you can say Janeliasoul is a waist beads influencer, lol.
Do you have any go-to staple wardrobe pieces that you have to have when performing?
I love the ankara rope necklaces because I feel like an African Queen when I wear them. Then there are the waist beads which have become a signature piece for me.
Do you have any favorite independent brands or stores you like to shop at?
I enjoy shopping in Nigeria and Ghana and even Dubai. A lot of the products in my merch store are imported from these places and I also enjoy traveling there to source for products for my merch store and for my personal collection.
What advice would you give someone looking to build their own sense of style?
I would say be original and keep it simple at the same time. My sense of style is inspired by where I am originally from and I don't think you can go wrong when you stick to your origins. You can add other fashion influences but that foundation needs to be there.
Please let our readers know where to find you!
You can find me online when you search my stage name which is also the name of the band "Janeliasoul". So my artist website is Janeliasoul.com and all my social media handles are also Janeliasoul.
